Pubs and Clubs of Castleford

Castleford, in West Yorkshire, England, was in past times a highly

industrious town. Industries included pottery, glassblowing,

chemicals, confectionary and of course, mining.

After their labours of the day, the hardworking population had an amazing number of pubs and clubs to frequent.

Over several years I have compiled a list of many that some will remember, some that were new to me, and I am sure to many

others.

The sources were censuses, maps and trade directories etc. Some

just word of mouth backed up by physical remnants.

Practical problems!!

Pubs often existed for long times with the same name but others changed to adapt to different social activities, some even moved.

Censuses, (which sometimes named a public house and sometimes didn't) were only every 10 years from 1841 and trade directories irregular. Newspapers would mention notable events.

Maps of any detail become sparse the futher back we go.

We work with what we are left !

Please contact me with any information or comments.
